Henry Rollins in for Jarvis Cocker 02/04
12 June 2016

Hello BBC Radio 6 listener and fellow music fan. We are back together again!

I hope you enjoyed last week’s show.

I designed the shows for Sunday afternoon / summer listening. What does that mean? The weekend is coming to an end, so there is Monday to consider. No need to slam the meters into the red for our brief time together. If the sun is out, it will be setting and chances are, the air will be warm.

I am fascinated with temperature and light cycle pertaining to what music I listen to. I absolutely know this is subjective, however, I have it in my mind that some bands and artists are right for certain times of the year.

Some of my warm weather favorites: Albert Ayler, Unrest, Rites of Spring, Generation X (first album), Damned (first three albums), Bowie (Lodger, Scary Monsters), a lot of Dub like Scientist, King Tubby, Prince Jammy, the first Killing Joke album, Total Control, Ausmuteants, Dick Diver, Lower Plenty, tons of bands from Finland like Uton and Kemialliset Ystävät, so much great music from Japan like Kikagaku Moyo, Les Rallizes Denudes and Keiji Haino, Ashtray Navigations, aka Phil Todd from Leeds, Clarinette, anything by Lorelle Meets the Obsolete (their new album Balance will be out later in the summer. It is fantastic.) As you can imagine, I could go on and on.

Random Notes Dept.: If you notice, we are rocking David Bowie’s ridiculously great version of the Velvet Underground’s classic White Light/White Heat from the album of the same name. That particular VU record, especially in mono—don’t get me started. David Bowie’s version is so cool! Anyway, the collection I pulled it from, Bowie at the Beeb, was originally issued on CD. Recently it was issued as a 4 LP set. If you have seen this and are tempted but were waiting for a review to hurl you to the record store, here it is: it sounds incredible. Easily one of the best sets you will pick up this year and one of the best retrospectives of any artist anywhere.

Get Ready Get Set Dept.: There are have been and will be SO MANY great records out this year. Here are a few from both categories. I have heard them all and think they’re happening.

What’s out now:
Angry Angles / Angry Angles – Goner Records (all their singles on one LP)
Kid Congo and the Pink Monkey Birds / La Araña Es La Vida – In The Red Records
Kikagaku Moyo / House in the Tall Grass – Guruguru Brain
Charles Moothart (CFM) / Still Life of Citrus and Slime In The Red Records
Ty Segal / Emotional Mugger – Drag City
Guerilla Toss / Eraser Stargazer – DFA
Ashtray Navigations / The Mechanical Abrasions Of (series) – Memoirs of an Aesthete
Uton / Psychic Archives #05 - Om Ha Sva Ha Ksha Ma La Va Ra Yam
Kim Salmon / My Script – Bang
VUM / Cryptocrystalline – Secret Lodge

What’s coming out:
Lorelle Meets the Obsolete / Balance - Captcha
Dinosaur Jr. / Give a Glimpse of What Yer Not - Jag Jaguar
GØGGS / GØGGS – In The Red Records
Thee Oh Sees / Live in San Francisco – Castle Face Records
Ex-Cult / Negative Growth – In the Red Records

Oh, and then there are all the great tunes we will check out on this show.

You might notice tunes from Australia and some from New Zealand popping up here and there all through the show. I just got back from a week in Sydney and as usual, there were a lot of records that needed to be rescued from the shops and taken back to my place. The extraction was successful and they’re safe with me.

The new Kim Salmon album My Script is so great. Apparently, I will be running into him in the next few days at an upcoming festival.

Don’t Forget This Part Dept.: Please listen carefully to the last track of the night. It’s by the Ruts and not only is it one of the greatest b-sides ever, it holds a little audio that we will be examining next week. At the 3:37 mark, you will hear the Ruts bust out an a cappella rendering of what sounds like a 50’s era rock tune. They are in fact copping a moment from a song called The Martian Hop, released by the Ran-Dells in 1963 and for some reason, in 1973 by Stax Records group the Newcomers. We will listen to both versions next week, so get ready to enjoy that.

As far as what we have tune wise, if you find yourself curious, there is information on almost all of these tracks on the info highway. As always, the most important thing is that we all have a blast hanging out listening to music.

Until next week!
