Henry Rollins in for Jarvis Cocker 01/04
5 June 2016

Hello BBC Radio 6 listener and fellow music fan. My name is Henry Rollins and I have been given the great yet daunting opportunity to fill in for your usual man in this slot, Mr. Jarvis Cocker. He is busy currently pursuing some artistic activities but I am sure at some point, he shall return.

Obviously, I cannot replace the man but perhaps you will dig the tracks that I will be laying on you over the next four Sundays.

I was raised primarily by my mother, who was a serious music fan. We went to the record store at least once a week, sometimes more. The listening fare was quite eclectic. Mozart, Wagner, Bartok, Streisand, Miles, Dylan, Hendrix, Joplin, Makeba, show tunes, were just a fraction of what she was into. The apartments we lived in were small and so the music was inescapable.

I liked music better than people. The records I had were never mean to me like kids in school or at the playground, so I spent a lot of time in my room with either the record player on or the radio. Songs became my friends and the singers felt like alt parents. I met Dionne Warwick once and told her how her voice had raised me and she told me she understood. Music is great that way.

My best friend since he was 11 and I was 12 is Ian MacKaye, who you might know from his bands Minor Threat and Fugazi. We spent hours listening to records growing up and went to the record store every week.

Punk Rock hit us like a truck. Neither of us have recovered. Bands like the Adverts, the Ruts, Buzzcocks, the Damned, the UK Subs and countless others became part of our DNA. Top this day, we still spend a lot of time listening to music together and exchanging new discoveries.

In the 1980’s, I became interested in all kinds of music from all over the world and that’s when I started hitting every part of the record store, trading tapes and searching for interesting music anywhere I could find it. As the years have passed, this has only become worse. I come back from tour with record bags on both shoulders and more in my luggage.

These four shows scheduled for this June are the product of a relentless obsession with music and almost all music media. I have had a radio show in the USA since 2004. Putting together sets is one of the best things I have ever had the chance to do. I like every aspect of it. From concepting the idea of what the show should be to micro managing the tone and texture of the overall. They take hours to make but I think it’s worth it.

I reckon the listeners are sharp and don’t need their intelligence restrained, so I like to cover a lot of ground while maintaining a constant of excellence throughout. To be succinct, there is one basic genre I am pulling from for our sonic gatherings: good music. It’s as simple as that.

These notes you’re reading is a thing I have been doing for many years on my show on KCRW FM in California. I post all the songs we will listen to ahead of time so you have the choice of finding out what you’re in for or later on, if you were curious about a track, you can easily access the information. Often, I will include site addresses for bands, information on preorders for new records, live dates for bands currently touring and anything else I think might be useful.

I will be posting one of these for all of our June shows, so be on the look out for them hitting on Friday. During June, I will be on the move all over Europe, so I will do my best to get them to you on time.

Below you will find all the tracks we will be listening to this time around. Thanks for checking out these notes and I really hope you enjoy what we have put together for you.

Until next week!
